Legal Aspects of Midwifery (Second Edition) -
Bridgit Dimond
As ever, Bridget's work is clear, well-written and relatively easy to understand for those who have little or no experience of the law. This updated edition includes useful questions and exercises at the end of each section, which students may find it useful to work through in order to develop their understanding of this area.
The book covers almost every area of midwifery and the law one could ever want to know about. The only addition I might make would be a few more pages about the legal rights of women in relation to the more of the current 'hot' issues, e.g. unassisted birth and a woman's right (or otherwise) to be attended during labour at home. The boxes of information throughout the text are helpful, the index is easy to use and there is a useful glossary. If you were looking for a comprehensive reference book on legal issues and midwifery, this should cover about ninety-nine percent of what you might need to know.
Perhaps inevitably, given the subject area, the sheer volume of factual information can sometimes seem too much. I used the first edition to 'dip into' more than to read as a book, and the second is much of the same. This is a useful text, and all midwives should know how to find a copy, but it's not a book to curl up with on the sofa!
